The Miao People
The Miao people, a Chinese minority, living in the rural mountains of central China, create batik fabrics that are hand designed, hand dyed and hand painted using the batik wax-resist process which is a wax-on and wax-off procedure in smaller factories where the women are predominantly the workers.
Living according to the customs of their minority tribe, they use natural products from the countryside for their dyes, usually indigo, and natural glue from the locust bean to glue the backing on the hand embroidered Works of Art.
Since there is a large population of Miao women that do not read or write, their only income is from their crafts. The Miao are very industrious. They create products from batik fabrics which include purses, yard goods, hand-embroidered clothing and many other items only made in the villages in China.
